ASHLAND CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT
SMOKE DETECTOR PROGRAM
In the past eight years since starting their smoke detector program, the Ashland Fire Department has given out 3800 smoke detectors, and six hearing impaired models, to Ashland residents. They have given Samaritan Home Care about 400 of those to give to patients who were identified as not having one in the home, and the rest went toward Ashland County School educational safety programs and to families identified in our community who do not have them.
This community project has now become a partnership between the Ashland Fire Department and the Samaritan Hospital Foundation. Recently, the Foundation donated $1,725 to the AFD in order to all them to continue to purchase smoke detectors as a safety precaution.
In addition, The Marjorie Clark Ingmand Fund with the Foundation also currently purchases smoke detectors for the Samaritan Birthing and Women's Unit to give to parents of newborns upon their discharge from the Hospital. This separate and long-running program to promote safety of children in the home is still in place at Samaritan Hospital. The late Marjorie Clark Ingmand earmarked funds for this project after reading about a house fire in our community that involved children.
The Ashland County Auditor's Office also recently donated funding the Ashland Fire Department's smoke detector fund following a Fire Safety Class instructed by Captain Tom Smith. Local charitable organizations are encouraged to donate funds to support the ongoing safety initiatives and can contact the Ashland Fire Department, Fire Prevention Bureau.
